A few weeks ago, I completed five days of work experience from the 17th to the 21st of June. I spent the first two days with Drove Farm Vets, a local farm vet practice. During this time, we went on routine visits, checked for pregnancies using ultrasounds, and induced pregnancies when necessary. I also observed two sheep castrations and even got to milk some cows! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it really opened my eyes to the possibility of becoming a farm vet. Getting to know the clients on a personal level and working independently were aspects of the job that really intrigued me.
For the remaining three days, I was at Vets4Pets in Bristol. There I saw some lap spays, cat castrations, and two dental procedures. Returning to a small animal practice environment was really enjoyable for me. I found it ideal to have both of these placements in the same week, as it allowed me to compare these two sides of the veterinary world and identify the aspects I enjoy the most.
This week of work experience made me reconsider my options, as I am now very interested in farm vetting. However, it also solidified my determination to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. I am now more definite than ever that this is the pathway for me.
